Traditional Chinese New Year begins from the first day of the lunar calendar and ends on the 15th. During Chinese New Year, chinese have the culture of having all things new. They buy new clothes, do house cleaning, cook delicious food, visit relatives and friends. It’s a celebration of sending away the old year. Chinese calligraphy with best wishes are used on packaging design, home decoration and red envelop design.

In 21st century, red envelop not only serves the purpose as a blessing from elder to junior, it’s also a way to advertise and served as a greeting material to the customer. We can get new red envelops from bank, shopping mall, boutique, packet drink and so on as a free gift.

The design of red envelops are evolving. Traditional designs use only gold stamping for graphics on top of the red envelops.

If you are familiar with chinese painting, peony flower, lotus flower, fishes and kids character will not be new to you. We can roughly categorize the design elements into: 1. Flowers 2. Animals (fishes or 12 zodiac) 3. Calligraphy 4. Characters.

If you think red envelop designs are stereotype in red color, then you are wrong. Some modern designers able to create new mood by changing the color tone and printing method.
