“Ignore the mess of my working space, come in and look at my artwork” ~ Jaz

dsc_3080_s.jpg

I graduated in 1997 as an illustrator in a local college. As we all know, that was the year we face an economy recession. Which meant job was hard to come by for a fresh graduate like me. Thus, my first job was as a lorry driver and pay was pretty as low as RM 300.

Matchbox

June 4th, 2007

lightbox.jpg

As far as I’ve known, matchstick has existed far ever longer than I’ve ever known. Being the most useful yet deadliest tool as well, we’re not here to focus on how it would help us with its functionality, but its packaging design. As you can see from the box above, it’s hot as fire and dry as a chilli. Probably.

It’s going to be an on-going project where we’ll accept entries and pictures from you, anywhere around the world, tell us about your country’s matchbox design. What you’ll need to include before sending your information to info[at]designenterprise.com

  • Your Name
  • Your Website (optional)
  • Description on what is on the design
  • An image/snapshot of the matchbox

Kindly leave a comment here in this post if you have any questions.

Breaking Tradition, Making Tradition

May 25th, 2007

p5100002.jpg

  • Packaging for a famous herbal drink. Literally means single-eyed man herbal tea. Note there is a tendency to promote the brand across the packaging subtly. (The outer ring)

This is a series of traditional product designs which is still available in Malaysia’s market. These products still in existence are traditional medication and they hail from the 70s and 80s. Back then, to build up their reputation with the limitations of its print technology of that era, they have used eye-catching color combinations and traditional patterns. Images of its founder/developer’s were used as a selling point to garner attention from its customers. It is one of the best ways to build up a relationship with its customers. To date these products still have a market in Malaysia and many Asian countries. Does the packaging of these products cash on customer loyalty? Without customers’ loyalty, how will these products survive in this market with its traditional packaging? Or is its survival subject to it being traditional.

We’re fortunate to have Eugene to share some of his phone card collections from our neighbour, Singapore. It has been a long time since we I’ve come across any phone card that you will use at public phone in our country. Except for cards that you’ll able to purchase for long distant calls.

The Yellow Legend

March 30th, 2007

Following a thread from lowyat.net, which there is a discussion on the infamous YellowMan which has since appeared on all of the DiGi’s TVC.

It has reached to a certain extend that this campaign overexceeded my expectation and amazed the heck out of me. Started which more than a year ago, that now it has been on all of Malaysian’s word of mouth to talk about the yellow man that does not bear any name. Which initially, it did really catch an attention with the TVC bearing the famous song “I Will Follow You” that is later translated to both Chinese and Malay version of the TVC. Suprisingly the songs are then made a big hit and everyone requested if there is any channel they can have it towards their phone as a ringtone.

Top : A news article that talks about the Yellow Man appearance on a local primary school credits (jovial)

It seems that it is not about selling a product towards the consumer anymore of telecommunication, but an image, a brand or even a character which people will remember inside their heart dearly.

It has since then became even a bigger word of mouth between Malaysian when the Chinese New Year TV spot debutted early this year that relates to the idea of having a Wide Coverage in almost every part of the house. Hilarious as it seems, it does really catches the audience’s attention, creates a memory and to create a positive positioning for the brand.

digi10.jpg
The campaign itself went so massive that they even sent out the yellow man mascots to famous hypermarkets nationwide. What really amazed when I heard that on one of the small concert they’ve sponsored recently had their mascot running around the crowd below the stage!
