LENA ANG Queen of Malaysian Butoh returns with
PINK
A Butoh performance by TARO DANCE THEATRE
Embrace the sweet and the sticky of our gender stereotypes!

This Butoh-inspired work takes a peep at contemporary gender stereotypes
and throws them back at you – with a twist!
Butoh is an improvisatory dance originated in urban Japan in the 1950s and is characterised by contorted movements that defy the aesthetics of traditional Japanese dance and western contemporary dance. Lena Ang, an internationally acclaimed Malaysian dancer based in the USA, was responsible for introducing Butoh to the Malaysian arts world in the 1990s.

A little message from Lena Ang
Hi there,
I am truly excited to be in KL and cherographing PINK . Its good to be working again with dancer friends — Ana, Janette and Palani. It has been 10 years since we danced together as Taro Dance Theatre because life has scattered us throughout the world. I’ve lived in New York and London, Ana’s based in England, Palani and Janette in Australia. We’ve been planning for PINK for a whole year via email. I didn’t really believe we could do it till I was in the same room with Ana, Janette, Palani and Julian at the Annexe in Central Market. Julian is our producer and has been our rock in KL. I just want to share my excitement with you. PINK is going to be a fabulous show — classy, naughty and a little gory. Come catch us!

The show features five excellent artists who are top exponents of contemporary Uruguayan art. Aiello, Masi, Martin and Marcelo Mendizabal and Romero come from different age groups, backgrounds and schools of painting. They offer a vast diversity of styles, palettes, techniques and personalities. At the same time, as a common denominator, they all are outstanding painters producing genuinely good art. Thanks Yik Jian.

Unveiling The Hidden
Our good friend Kenny has just came back from the new Honda CIVIC launch event which took place yesterday. The event itself unveiled two new type of model from the brand, Type-R and Civic Hybrid which indeed is a good start to the automotive industry here in our country, promoting a more eco-friendly vehicle. Perhaps this is a kickstart which it would probably take few more years to make the technology mainstream-affordable. Post-visit event report coming real soon with whole lot of goodness!

The organizing committee of the International Symposium of Electronic Arts 2008 (ISEA2008) with generous support from the National University of Singapore (NUS), is soliciting proposals from New Media artists to work collaboratively with NUS centers of research and arts in preparation of work to be submitted for exhibition during the July 2008 ISEA in Singapore. Unlike previous symposia where there was a separate call for artists in residence and one of art works for exhibition, ISEA2008 will only have one call for artists’ submission. The submissions selected for the AIR will also be subsequently produced and shown in the main ISEA exhibition. Submissions from countries and cultures underrepresented at other New Media venues are particularly encouraged.
Residencies of up to 3 months in duration can be supported, and must be completed before July 2008. Financial support from NUS is available for:
- Economy airfare to and from the artist/designers country of residence,
- University housing while the artist is in Singapore,
- A monthly allowance of S$2000,
- Materials cost of up to S$1000.

The Bon Festival, or more widely known as The Bon Odori Festival, are held in Malaysia annually on the 13th of July at both Shah Alam’s Matsushita Sports Centre and in Penang. But for this year itself, it was held on the 14th instead due to the weekend placement of the day itself. It is a great event to begin with especially for the first timer where you get to experience and participate in the folk dance. Originally, O-bon (お盆, O-bon?) or only Bon (盆, Bon?) is a Japanese Buddhist holiday to honor the departed spirits of one’s ancestors, however in Malaysia it is less associated with Buddhism. Some of us might even felt that it shared bit of similarity with the Hungry Ghost festival that is widely celebrated by Chinese from around the world.
Hit the jump and enjoy our coverage on the interesting annual cultural event. It was an eye opening experience for me as a first timer ever since it was held more than a decade ago!

This event was held on 19th of May 2007, which gathers most of the car enthusiasts, models and photographers around Klang Valley. We also had the event announced a while ago in DE.
And most of us might ask if this has to do with a design blog, well that it might be a direct relation at first but as soon you read through, you might learn one or two new things on culture and design in car enthusiasts community. Pretty neat I would say. Putting aside the Fast N Furious scene, it’s much less like a playground for collectors, just like what a coke lover would do.
