The Cake Sharer

June 4th, 2008

There are so many celebrations going around in the world. Most of these celebrations has something in common. No matter birthdays or weddings, christmas or mother’s day, everyone sits down in a circle and enjoy the one thing that matters most, the cake. Our cakes always come with some candles and a plastic knife. We then usually use tissue paper to hold our cake and gobble it in anyway.Well, designer Jung-Suk Choi chose to differ. Jung introduces the “Cake Sharer“. As you can see in the images, it comes with the cake box. Everything you use from the knife to the plate comes from the box itself. (it also comes with a mini spoon…. how cute!!)

example of cake sharer

Heres a close up shot of how the ‘plate’ is easily created from the special cake box. First tear the die cut.

Then fold accordingly.

Ta-da! You get your scoop + plate for your special special cake. Yum~! :)

Now, what’s more environmental friendlier than eating cake?

Solar Water Disinfecting Tarpaulin

June 2nd, 2008

This odd looking thing looks like a big whale’s fin doesn’t it? Well, no the people in the pictures are not killing whales. This is actually a life saving invention called the Solar Water Disinfecting Tarpaulin, designed by San Francisco based architect & CCA professor Eric Olsen. It is a portable filtration system designed for areas where potable water is a luxury. It can be put to good use in disaster areas, developing urban areas, rural regions, etc.

The vessel is powered by solar radiation and can be easily filled and carried. The tough tarpaulin is composed of laser cut LDPE (a type of thermoplastic made from oil) and rubberized nylon and it expands to hold up to 20 liters of water, which is rendered drinkable after five hours of exposure to the sun. This purification method is approved by the World Health Organization, and uses passive solar heat and ultraviolet radiation to kill disease causing bacteria. The Solar Water Disinfecting Tarpaulin can be easily rolled for storage and transport. It has also won the 2008 Metropolis Magazine Next Generation design competition. You can read more about it here.

STC - Afaq Shamel DSL commercials

May 9th, 2008

Conjugating violent tantrums with soothing folk ballads is Leo Burnett’s big idea for their client Afag Shamel DSL in promoting their open internet source service. Just another humorous exaggeration or plain dark humor; what say you?
